Obituary of Eric Peter Atencio

Eric Peter Atencio, age 51, of Scottsdale Arizona went home to be with our heavenly Father on July 4th, 2014. Born on November 19, 1962 in Los Angeles, California, to loving parents Theodore and Irene Atencio, he moved often as a child and lived for a time in New York, Mexico City, Connecticut, Arizona, New Jersey, and Utah, settling eventually back in Arizona where he resided for the past 20 years. Eric graduated from Brophy Prep in 1981 and went on to attend the University of Utah majoring in business. Eric had a successful financial career with Commercial Factors of Salt Lake, Altres Financial of Phoenix, New Horizon Capital, and TranSend Int'l. In addition to a great financial mind he was very personable and outgoing which led him to work professionally as a motivational speaker helping many through his seminars. Eric was involved as a board member of the Commercial Finance Association, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and volunteered in an area where his heart was truly drawn, the Special Olympics. Eric was an accomplished athlete, holding the football record for most receptions at Brophy Prep for many years, and running in various marathons. He enjoyed all sports, number one being football, cooking, priding himself in his culinary creations, and listening to music. He found peace in the tranquil beaches and warm waters of Hawaii. His all-time favorite place to visit was Disneyland. He had a special place in his heart for Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta who walked with the homeless and addicted, and his faith was strong. Eric is survived by his son Xavier of Cave Creek, AZ, parents Theodore and Irene Atencio, brother and sister in law Timothy and Julie, and brother Patrick, all of Las Vegas, sister and brother in law Gloria and Bill Thomas of Calimesa, California, nephews Matt Atencio and Brett Thomas, niece Colleen Thomas, and great niece Kylie. He is predeceased by his nephew, John Thomas Jr. Eric's deep faith and sweet memory will forever be alive within us. We will miss his smile, his laugh, the twinkle in his eyes. We are thankful for the blessings of his life, and the gifts he gave us of true compassion and genuine love for all. Ad Majorem Dei Glorium. A Requiem Mass will be held at 2 PM Friday July 18th at St. Joseph the Husband of Mary Catholic Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. Interment will be private at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. In lieu of flowers please consider the needs of the homeless among us or a donation to Hospice of the Valley, Coronado home, Phoenix.
