Obituary of James Whittier May

On Monday January 11th the world didn't stop moving, but it should have. We lost our dad and our mom's husband of over 54 years. It was sudden and unexpected. Lost feels like the only word to describe how we feel. Dad's presence was a calm room we could all rely on. He is the place we would have run to if we were ever this broken. There is no getting over his death, when the very first block of our identity was built on being his girls. But his strength lives in our bones; his wisdom will always be considered, even if we can't always follow it; and his laugh will remain the compass of our hearts. There are so many people he encouraged, and so many teachings he gave, but to us he was just dad, except with all of the best adjectives: funny, weird, annoying, generous, loving, and rock solid. And to mom he was Jimmy who she loved, James Whittier May III if he told a terrible joke, James if he was in trouble, and Jim May who she was endlessly proud of. He was Uncle Jim, Brother Jim, Grandpa Jim, and the irreplaceable Bopop. The void he left cannot be filled but he made sure that each and every member of his family will carry a piece of him in our hearts. Due to the horrific conditions of the pandemic, and to keep our loved ones as safe as possible, we have made the heart-breaking decision to have a family-only gathering but there will be a virtual link for anyone who would like to join us to say goodbye. The service time will be Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 4pm MST. A link for the this service will be updated when we have it.
