Derrick Reynolds

Obituary of Derrick Eugene Reynolds

It was the last Friday of the month in February on the 24th day at 0120 that Derrick (Rick) Reynolds became absent from his body to be present with our Lord unexpectedly.

Derrick (Rick) Reynolds was born to Robert Eugene and Geraldine Reynolds on April 29, 1959, in Detroit, Michigan.  During his childhood he was surrounded by a large family with lots of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and neighbors.   Being the first male grandchild of his generation, he loved hanging out with his uncles and watching baseball and basketball games.  He would often share his favorite childhood moments were those spent fishing and camping with his grandfather (Louis Reynolds, Sr.) and being spoiled by his grandmother (Elgin Reynolds).

He graduated from Oak Park High School in 1977 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy.  Derrick was honorably discharged.  While a reservist, he met his future wife Charlene (Hopkins) on a cold winter day in 1983 after a basketball game.   In late 1984 they were both baptized at Liberty Temple Church in Detroit, Michigan.   In 1985, they made the decision to relocate from Detroit to Phoenix to begin their life together.  They married in 1986 and welcomed their only child, Lamar in 1989.

Over 36 years of marriage they would travel the country and Mexico with family and friends seeking great food and a place where Derrick could dance.  His joy was watching his son play soccer throughout the years and supporting his wife through her numerous educational and career pursuits.  Derrick’s passion beyond family was watching his beloved Michigan Wolverines and hosting dinners at home where he would showcase his cooking skills.

Derrick was known for being a jokester and someone who connected with people of all ages.  He retired for Karsten Manufacturing in 2021, after 34 years of service.   He leaves behind his wife Charlene, son Lamar, sisters Robin, Angela, Cyaandii Rhon (Lou), and Renee.  In-laws Angela and Charlie, sisters-in-law Wendy (Anthony), Precious (Ron), and Ebone and his aunt Paulette who was like a mother to him.  There are countless uncle, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will always remember Rick.
